At first glance, this cocktail, created by Erik Adkins for the eternally popular Slanted Door restaurant in San Francisco, seems like a cross between a Hemingway Daiquiri and a Last Word: You could say the gin replaces the former’s rum, or that grapefruit takes the place of the green Chartreuse in the latter, along with some slight changes in the proportions. If you like both of those classic cocktails, you’re sure to adore this new twist.

Its bright flavors are lovely at any time, which may be why the cocktail has remained on the restaurant’s menu for many years. But it’s especially wonderful in wintertime, when grapefruit is in season and at its very peak. Be sure to use classic yellow grapefruit rather than pink; you’ll want the higher acidity in order to balance the sweet maraschino.
