The Bootlegger was born in 2015 from a student project that aimed to bring an innovative concept to Saint-Laurent Boulevard in Montreal. The idea was clear: to create a place of discovery and refinement, halfway between a cocktail bar, a jazz cabaret, and an American Prohibition-era speakeasy.

From its inception, the Bootlegger’s vision was to offer much more than just a bar: an intimate and festive space, inspired by the Roaring Twenties, where craft cocktails, premium whiskey, live music, and a cabaret atmosphere come together to create a unique experience in the heart of Montreal.

On June 17, 2016, Le Bootlegger officially opened its doors to Montrealers. Initially conceived as an authentic Prohibition-inspired jazz cabaret, the establishment quickly found its calling in cocktails and artisanal mixology. Over the years, its stage has been transformed to host a wide variety of shows: comedy, blues, hip-hop, live music, and artistic variety. Now a true performance venue and cocktail bar in Montreal, le Bootlegger has distinguished itself with its intimate and festive atmosphere.

The project quickly evolved into a family business, shaping the warm spirit and authentic soul that today make le Bootlegger a must-see destination for cocktail, whisky, and music culture lovers in Montreal.

We chose to establish ourselves on St. Laurent Boulevard, formerly known as the Main, a true emblem of Montreal’s nightlife. This choice was no accident: the venue had once been a legendary live venue, home to several musicians now internationally renowned.

Our mission was clear: to restore authenticity and refinement to St. Laurent Boulevard, after decades where it had gradually lost its luster. By opening a unique speakeasy cocktail bar, we wanted to offer both local residents and Main residents a unique experience, where artisanal mixology, musical culture, and an intimate atmosphere come together.
