January 29, 2018

A jealous selection, an incredible presenter and an audience of over 70 people, it was a perfect evening at all levels. We, The Bootlegger, started the year off strong with this tasting of The Macallan & Highland Park. With the collaboration of Beam Suntory, Cameron Millar who is the brand ambassador for Edrington, presented us with three bottles from each of the distilleries.

The tasting was super well introduced by Mr. Millar with a brief retrospective of his journey to the ambassador that he is today. He is a very interesting character, elegant to make us jealous, he knew how to feed the crowd and keep us attentive.

The Macallan

For the THE Macallan part, we tasted the 12 years old, the No.2 and the Rare Cask. It was not very long ago that I started drinking Macallan and I greatly anticipated this presentation. Despite years of being in the whiskey world, it was finally during my 2018 vacation that I began to explore this great brand.

Obviously the Rare Cask stole the show, but I was pleasantly surprised to drink no.2. I had already tasted it in the past during a tasting at the SAQ-Signature, without being impressed. This time, these notes of vanilla, black pepper and oak knew how to charm me to finally capture my attention.

Highland Park

For the second part of the evening, we tasted the 12 years old, the Valkyrie and the Fire Edition. By far, this part was the most interesting. Cameron took us through Viking mythology, the history of Scotland and where the names of each bottle came from. It was, totally amazing and exciting!

The big winner is without hesitation the Fire Edition, this scotch is aged in port barrels, which gives it a reddish hue. I noticed flavors of vanilla, slightly cinnamon, peat and a little something fruity.
